Tasting Notes From March 2006

Chateau Thieuley
2003
Blanc, Sec
Lively nose, more like Sauvignon Blanc than Semillon with peachy lime flavors. Rich attack, but the finish shortens out and turns more woody. Pretty good value. $13; '99 and '01 Bordeaux at Taverna

Pichon Longueville Baron
1999 Pauillac
Inky, slightly tannic nose of smoke. Subdued fruit on the nose. The palate is a bit "sweeter" with hints of tannin. '99 and '01 Bordeaux at Taverna

Pichon Longueville Baron
2001 Pauillac
Funky nose of petroleum initially. Glass? Solid, less expressive and more acidic on the palate. '99 and '01 Bordeaux at Taverna

Chateau Monbousquet
1999 St. Emilion
Mint and menthol on the nose Slightly pretty smelling for an earthier wine region (Bordeaux). Rich sweet black and red fruit turning a bit more tannic in the finish. Nice, and one of my favorites of the night. '99 and '01 Bordeaux at Taverna

Chateau Monbousquet
2001 St. Emilion
More earthy with similar minty menthol flavors. Well made. More tobacco and weediness. Not as likeable as the '99. '99 and '01 Bordeaux at Taverna

Chateau Pape Clement
2001 Graves
Coffee aromas. Concentrated compared to the Sociando tasted alongside. Currant fruit. Where will this go? '99 and '01 Bordeaux at Taverna

Sociando Mallet
2001 Haut Medoc
Tannic and a bit vinous. Okay. '99 and '01 Bordeaux at Taverna

Chateau Pavie Macquin
2001 St. Emilion
Sweet oak nose. Fruit forward dark fruit with a tiny bit of menthol. Day two this smelled pleasantly of sweet tobacco as well. Pretty good, but overpriced. $60; '99 and '01 Bordeaux at Taverna

Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste
1999 Pauillac
Rich and concentrated smelling. Tannic cedar and currant fruit. Notes and memory are failing here. '99 and '01 Bordeaux at Taverna

Chateau Lynch Bages
2001 Pauillac
Nice nose of currant and cedar. Classic smelling. Currant fruit with overtones of earth. Suggestion of kool aid. Day two this wine was still tightly wound. '99 and '01 Bordeaux at Taverna

Chateau Branaire Ducru
2001 St. Julien
Chewey black currant fruit. Decent. From 375. '99 and '01 Bordeaux at Taverna

Chateau Rieussec
2000 Sauterne
Lovely wine. I always enjoy a good Sauterne. Rich sweet apricot fruit tinged with that difficult to describe spicy quality of botrytis. '99 and '01 Bordeaux at Taverna
