Sonoma-Napa September 2001

Wine - Vino - Vin

Sonoma and Napa, August 2001

Day Uno

We arrived Wednesday morning into SFO and headed straight for the wine country. Our first appointment was at Havens/Franus. Alexis lead us through the Havens wines and tasted us on a few of the Franus wines. Overall we enjoyed all the wines.

Havens and Franus

Alexis was kind enough to make us reservations at Bistro Jeanty.

After that we made a courtesy stop at Cline to visit with a business acquaintance who has a family tie-in there. We weren’t crazy about any of the wines.

Cline

Dinner at Mistral (Now Closed) in Santa Rosa was pleasant. An appetizer of seared scallops had a really intense butter sauce.
Tasted the Rafanelli 98 cab and a couple other random wines...

Philip Staley 1999 Viognier Decent Viognier nose of stone fruits and minerals. Hollow midpalate with flab and not enough concentration. Wonder if the bottle had been open a while?

Rafanelli 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Dry Creek Valley - Four-square. Soft, fairly supple and ripe with some coffee and green flavors. Not exactly mind-blowing. $44

Porter Creek 1997 Pinot Noir tasted a bit soft. Cola cherries. Medium bodied. Might be a decent value Pinot.

Day Due

The next morning we went to Fisher and had a nice chat with both Fred Fisher and his daughter Whitney. The have a gorgeous property on the backside of Macaymas range.

Fisher

We stopped at a few Sonoma wineries after that out of curiosity

Deloach

Sebastopol Vineyards

Martinelli

David Coffaro Winery

Pat and Dave were wonderful hosts. Quite a site to see the theater in the winery. Fun little wines too.

Meeker Winery tasting room in Geyserville

The pourer Cynthia was hilarious. She kept swirling the Meeker 99 Zin in a miniature carafe and inhaling the scent like it was dope or something…quite a character…we enjoyed the wines too

Then lunch at Oakville Grocery (we didn't order well) and a stop into a wine store on the square in Healdsburg where they were pouring a few wines...

That was about enough for one day. Our significant others joined us that evening, but too late to get into any of the nicer places (Why the hell do they close so early?) so we ended up with Pizza in Santa Rosa

Day Tres

Bright and early we drove up to Pride Mountain for our annual visit and to pick up wines we had purchased in the Spring…
Russell, one of the newer employees lead us on a nice tour and we finally got to walk through the caves that were under construction on our first visit. Everything was delicious, but none of us were fond of the Chardonnay.

Pride Mountain

I was told about a month prior to our trip that Behren’s and Hitchcock had an open house on Friday afternoons. That didn’t turn out to be the case, but Mike, pretty much their only assistant was nice as he could be taking us into their "caves" to taste from a couple of barrels.
We were stuck there for a while waiting on a locksmith. Our genius had backfired on us. We had a key made to our minivan rent car so that we could leave it running to keep the wine cool and still lock the car up…you see where I’m going with this…nice technique, but execution is important…we locked the keys in the car with the car running…

Behrens and Hitchcock

Anyway, we finally got the car unlocked and headed out to Von Strasser.

Von Strasser

Lu Ann gave us a great tour of the facilities and let us taste through most of the wines in barrel

Lunch was our next duty so we ate at the brewery in Calistoga and shared a unique wine called
Dusinberre 1997 Viognier Napa Valley - All about honey and fruit blossoms. Slightly cloying. Ripe, full bodied, very pleasant. $30

By now it was getting late in the afternoon so we stopped at Folie a Deux as it was open and we wanted to see what was up with their Reserve Cab. The best wines we tasted were the Harvey Zin and the Reserve Cab. Both were consensus faves…

Folie a Deux

We had dinner that night back in Santa Rosa at Syrah. One of the better meals from this trip. Everything was executed very well. The green salad has a great presentation and the almond ice cream we had for dessert was addictive. One entrée of hanger steak was disappointing, but that was about it.
With dinner we had a Dehlinger Pinot...

Dehlinger 1998 Pinot Noir Russian River Valley Estate - Blackberry jam on toast. Loses focus in the finish. Full bodied, concentrated. Great density and ripeness for a Pinot. My style. I usually prefer the denser ones. Tasted at Syrah restaurant in Santa Rosa. $70

Steele 1997 Chardonnay Late Harvest Carneros Impressive! Very rich and round. Long. Only modestly sweet. Interesting wine. $30.00

Day Quattro

Carlisle

The next morning we met Mike Officer at Carlisle’s facility in Santa Rosa and tasted some great Zins. Mike was friendly and candid and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

That was the last winery we had appointments to see, so we set out to hit some places we didn’t know much about…

Limerick Lane and Christopher Creek

Lunch at Manzanita in Healdsburg was okay. The service was quite slow
Had the Rochioli 2000 Sauvignon Blanc with lunch

Rochioli 2000 Sauvignon Blanc Russian River Valley - Great food wine. Grapefruit, grass, good varietal character. Concentrated palate. Brisk, but not painful acidity. We tasted this at Manzanita in Healdsburg and they initially served it to us at about 68 degrees. It was drinkable, but much better once it g" $20.00

Then stopped into the Belvedere tasting room out of curiosity before going down to the Selby Winery

Belvedere

Selby Winery

Palate fatigue was getting serious, but we stopped into Everett Ridge anyway..

Everett Ridge

Then it was back to the hotel to relax by the pool until dinner.
By the poolside we had the 2000 Gregory Graham Viognier

Gregory Graham 2000 Viognier Napa Valley - Spicy minerals, honey, apricots. Tight. Acid and alcohol? Just okay. Doesn't hit the high notes that the 98 Knight's Valley did for me. $28.00

Then we had dinner at what we think of as Bistro 101 in Sebastopol. It has changed hands since our last stop there. It hasn’t changed too much but I wasn’t quite as fond as on my first two visits. Had some interesting wines…

Mayo Family 1999 Chardonnay Apple juice. Sweet. Just okay. $24

Robert Biale 1999 Zinfandel Napa Valley Ripe. Big but balanced. Black cherry fruit. Impressive wine. I look forward to trying some other Biale Zins. $30

Brogan Cellars 1998 Pinot Noir Sonoma Ripe fruit. Soapy. Apricot (almost Viognier like quality) Jasmine? Full bodied. Dense fruit for a Pinot. Nice. Interesting. Partial bottle shared by the proprietor.

Brogan Cellars 1998 Zinfandel Sonoma County 18.3% Alc. HUGE monster of a wine. The nost smells more like Port. Dry on the palate. Ponderous and heavy. Best reserved for dessert. Overwhelming. From a 375ml.

Day Cinque

We set out to see some Sonoma Valley wineries Sunday morning. It was way too crowded but we stopped a few places.

Landmark Vineyards

Chateau St. Jean

Kunde

St. Francis

We headed out to SFO around 3, but traffic was ridiculous. We missed our flight by about 30 minutes and ended up spending the night near the airport and catching an early flight out. We were too tired to venture out, but had dinner at the restaurant in the hotel and carried in a couple of our purchases.

Blockheadia Ringnossi 2000 Sauvignon Blanc Lorenzo Lake Varietally correct nose. Grassy. Citrus on the palate. Decent. $18

Folie a Deux 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Napa Valley - Ripe and concentrated with dense black currant fruit. Cedar and cigar box nose. Velvety tannins. Impressive richness and density. Solid, tasty and delicious. $41

We had most of the airlines staff laughing at us as we pushed 14 cases of wine through a long line of travelers at 6 in the morning, but all the wine made it safe and sound. Another wonderful trip was had by all.

Cheers!
